By grace, God calls us

God’s calling does not begin with how prepared we are. It begins with the grace of Christ, reaching real people and leading them into a new life.

Devotional

Peter was a fisherman. His life was shaped by daily work, real limitations, and the pressure of depending on his own effort to keep going.

In Luke 5, after a night with no catch, Jesus steps into Peter’s boat and leads him to an overwhelming catch of fish. In that moment, Peter realizes he is not standing before just another teacher. He sees the holiness of Christ and says, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

That sentence reveals a heart confronted by truth. Peter does not try to look ready. Standing before Jesus, he sees himself clearly.

But Peter’s calling does not end with his weakness. In Luke 5:10, Jesus says, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” Christ knew Peter, and still He called him.

This teaches us that God does not call someone because He found a person already prepared. He calls by grace, and He shapes the life along the way.

That calling is not limited to one kind of person. Peter was a fisherman. Paul, before encountering Christ, was educated, religious, and deeply familiar with the Law. Still, he also had to be reached by grace. That is why, in 1 Corinthians 1:26-31, Paul reminds us that God chooses according to His purpose, so that no one may boast before Him.

The work begins with God.

When Jesus calls, He is not approving everything we are. He is inviting us to walk with Him and be transformed by His presence.

Maybe you look at your life and think you are not ready. Peter was not ready either. The point is not to bring God a perfect life, but to answer sincerely the One who calls us.

Today, come to Christ with honesty.

God calls us by grace.

Prayer

Lord, I do not want to pretend before You. I need Your grace. If it is Your will, use my life, even with everything that is still unfinished in me. Teach me to answer Your call with sincerity and faith. Amen.

1 ¶ And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing [their] nets.

3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, ‹Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.›

5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

7 And they beckoned unto [their] partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw [it], he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

10 And so [was] also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, ‹Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.›

11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, [are called]:

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, [yea], and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
