Simples Assim, Jesus begins with a calm and grounded presence: the devotional of the day, a public library, and a multilingual experience prepared from the start.

April 22, 2026•Luke 5:1-11

Simply obey.

Peter obeyed Jesus after a night with no results because he placed the Lord’s word above his own experience.

Devotional

Peter knew the sea.

He knew how to fish, knew the work, and had spent the whole night casting the nets without catching anything. When Jesus stepped into his boat, Peter was not starting the day with high expectations. He was coming from a long, exhausting night with nothing to show for it.

In Luke 5:4, Jesus said to Peter, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” That instruction probably did not make much sense to an experienced fisherman. Peter had already tried. From a practical point of view, going back out at that moment could have felt useless.

But Peter’s answer shows the heart of obedience: “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but at Your word I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:5.

Peter did not obey because he understood everything. He obeyed because he recognized the authority of Jesus’ word. His experience said one thing, but Christ had spoken. Faith begins to mature when we learn to place the Lord’s word above what seems most obvious to us.

That does not mean acting without wisdom. It means trusting that Jesus sees beyond our limits. Peter saw an empty night. Jesus saw what would come after obedience.

The catch came, but the main lesson is not only in the result. It is in the heart that responded to Christ’s voice before seeing any sign.

Life with God brings us through moments like that too. There are times when obedience feels hard because the answer has not come yet and the path is not clear. Even then, when the direction comes from God, obedience becomes an act of trust.

Today, ask the Lord for a heart willing to hear His word and respond with faith, even when the result is not yet in front of you.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to obey Your word. When I cannot see the result, help me trust Your direction. Let my heart learn to respond with faith to what You ask of me. Amen.

1 ¶ And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing [their] nets.

3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, ‹Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.›

5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

7 And they beckoned unto [their] partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw [it], he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

10 And so [was] also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, ‹Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.›

11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
