In John 6:28-29, the people asked Jesus what they should do to work the works of God. His answer was clear: “This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”
This word reaches a common unrest in the human heart. We want to know what to do in order to be accepted. We try to measure life with God by effort, by appearance, or by the feeling that we are fulfilling an obligation.
Jesus points to something deeper. The first work is not trying to prove that we are good. It is believing in the One whom the Father sent.
Believing in Jesus involves real trust. It means recognizing that we cannot save ourselves. It means no longer treating God as someone who must be convinced of our worth. It means receiving, in Christ, the grace we could never produce.
This faith reaches the way we live. When we trust Jesus, the heart begins to leave the anxiety of trying to earn God’s love. Obedience begins to grow from a relationship with the Father, and not from fear of being rejected.
Today, return to the center. Before trying to arrange everything outwardly, look to Christ with sincerity. The work of God begins when the heart trusts the Son.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, increase our faith. Teach us to trust You with sincerity and free us from trying to prove our worth before the Father. Lead our lives by Your Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
