By Grace, God Gave Us New Life in Christ

God found us when we had no power to create spiritual life for ourselves. In Christ, His mercy brought us out of our former condition and gave us a new identity, received by grace and grounded in what Jesus accomplished.

Devotional

Ephesians 2:4-9 shows God acting while we were still dead in our sins. The initiative was His. His mercy reached us before we had any merit to offer.

This truth speaks to anyone trying to make up for the past. We may carry guilt over earlier choices and assume we must prove to God that we deserve another chance. Faith can also become constant effort, as though His acceptance depended on our performance.

Paul says that God made us alive with Christ and gave us a new standing before Him. The past remains part of our story. Our identity is now connected to the life God has given us in Christ. That life came from His grace.

This truth confronts pride and relieves the weary heart. Trying to bargain with God loses its meaning when we understand what Christ has done. We can also release the fear of losing His love whenever we fail. Faith learns to rest in Jesus and responds with gratitude.

You may still see yourself only through the mistakes you made. Ephesians 2 reminds us that God sees those who are in Christ according to the life He has given them. Receive this truth and allow it to change the way you live today.

Prayer

Lord, help me rest in the grace that reached me in Christ. Free me from the guilt that holds me and teach me to live with gratitude for the new life I received. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4 ¶ But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6 And hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus:

7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
