Philippians 3:7-9 shows Paul reconsidering everything that once supported his confidence. His religious training and reputation seemed to give him a secure standing. After knowing Jesus, he understood that these advantages could never make him righteous before God.
This truth reaches our need to prove our worth. We may build a respectable image and depend on the approval of others to feel that life has meaning. We can also use work, knowledge, or Christian service to hide a weary heart that has grown distant from Christ.
Paul found in Jesus a righteousness received through faith. He no longer needed to place his hope in his own performance. Knowing Christ began to shape the way he viewed both achievement and loss.
Placing Jesus at the center changes the value we give everything else. We continue caring for our responsibilities and developing the gifts God has given us. These things no longer control our identity.
Consider where you have placed your deepest confidence. You may fear losing something because you believe your security depends on it. Bring that attachment to the Lord and ask Him to show you whether Christ truly holds first place in your heart.
