What Really Rules the Heart

The danger begins when money takes the place in the heart that belongs to God.

Devotional

Scripture speaks about money with honesty. It can meet real needs, support a household, and help others. The danger appears when it stops being a resource and begins to rule the heart.

In Hebrews 13:5, Scripture says, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have.” Then the Lord gives this promise: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Contentment grows when we trust that God remains with us and cares for our lives.

Jesus also said in Matthew 6:24, “No man can serve two masters.” He showed that a divided heart will eventually choose whom it obeys. When money rules, we begin to measure life by what we own, what we can gain, or what we are afraid to lose.

In Matthew 6:21, Jesus taught, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” This word leads us to look within. What fills our thoughts, decisions, and trust reveals much about the place God has in us.

1 Timothy 6:10 also warns that “the love of money is the root of all evil.” The text does not condemn work, provision, or responsible stewardship. It reveals the danger of a heart held by greed.

Every day, we need to ask the Lord for a free heart. Money may be part of life, but only God can sustain the soul, give true peace, and guide the heart safely.

Prayer

Lord, guard our hearts so that nothing takes Your place in us. Teach us to live with contentment, honesty, and trust in You. Deliver us from greed and help us seek Your Kingdom first. In Jesus’ name, amen.
