In Romans 8:13-14, Scripture says that through the Spirit we mortify the deeds of the body, and that “as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
This truth reaches a real struggle. There are desires, thoughts, and reactions that try to pull us away from God. At times, we know what the Word says, yet still feel the strength of the old way within us.
The Christian life cannot be sustained by willpower alone. We may promise change, try to control our attitudes, and still realize that the heart needs something deeper. We need the direction of the Holy Spirit.
He leads us near to Christ. Through His work, we begin to recognize what must be left behind. Sin is no longer treated as something small. Obedience begins to become a sincere response to the Father’s love.
Being led by the Spirit does not mean there is no struggle. It means we no longer walk alone. God works in us, including in the places where resistance still remains.
Today, ask the Holy Spirit for sensitivity to hear His direction. Bring Him what has been weakening your walk with God.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, guide our lives. Show us what must be left behind and strengthen our hearts to obey the Father. Lead our steps closer to Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
