Make the Lord Your Refuge
The heart grows more secure when we stop turning to God only in a crisis and learn to remain near Him. Psalm 91 invites us to trust His presence throughout ordinary days as well.
Devotional
Psalm 91:1-2 speaks of the person who dwells in the shelter of the Most High and rests under the shadow of the Almighty. To dwell means to remain. These words reach our tendency to seek God mainly when life moves beyond our control.
When everything seems manageable, we can rely too heavily on our own ability. We make plans hoping to anticipate what may happen and keep life under control. An unexpected event can quickly reveal how fragile that sense of security was.
Making the Lord our refuge begins before a crisis. It happens as we bring our concerns before Him and allow His Word to shape our decisions. Over time, staying close to God changes the way we carry what we still cannot resolve.
The psalmist shows a heart that knows where to remain when fear comes. Hebrews 4:16 reminds us that we can approach God with confidence to receive mercy and find grace. Through Jesus, that nearness is open to us.
There may be something you are trying to carry on your own. Acknowledge it before God. Tell Him what you fear and allow your security to rest less on what you can control.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to make You my refuge in ordinary days too. When I try to control everything on my own, draw my heart back to Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
