Christ Must Become Greater Than You

John 3:27-30 shows John the Baptist as people’s attention began turning toward Jesus. When others compared the two ministries, John understood his place and said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Those words reveal more than humility. John understood that his calling was not to gather people around himself. He had been sent to prepare the way for the Lord.

The same struggle can enter our lives. We may begin serving sincerely and gradually start wanting people to notice our effort, experience, or importance. Comparison feeds that desire. When someone else receives praise, something within us may become restless, even while our words remain spiritual.

Decreasing before Christ means allowing Him to examine our need for recognition. Sometimes this means serving without receiving credit. At other times, it means being glad when someone is encouraged through another person. The center shifts away from the image we are building and returns to faithfulness before the Lord.

Pay attention to your motives today. When you talk about what you do for God, are you helping people see Christ, or protecting your own importance? John found peace by accepting the limits of his assignment. That peace can reach your heart as well.

27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

30 He must increase, but I [must] decrease.
