Guilt grows when we turn our relationship with God into a record of personal merit. In Christ, our confidence finds rest in the righteousness God gives, instead of depending on our spiritual performance each day.
Devotional
Romans 10:1-4 describes people who were deeply devoted to God but unable to recognize the righteousness He offers through Christ. Paul was not describing a lack of religious interest. Their zeal was real. Their hearts, however, were trying to establish a standing before God through personal achievement.
This struggle can appear quietly. You pray and expect God to listen because you kept your routine. You help someone and feel that you have earned spiritual credit. After failing, you avoid prayer because you think you must improve before returning to the Lord. Your relationship with God begins to feel like an unspoken negotiation.
Paul directs our attention to Christ, because the righteousness we need before God does not come from human effort. It is received through faith. From that trust, obedience finds its proper place. You can serve, change your ways, and pursue holiness without turning those actions into a demand made against the Lord.
Examine what supports your spiritual security today. When guilt appears, do you hide or move toward Christ? When you do something right, do you expect God to repay you with His favor? Grace confronts our pride and receives our weariness. Rest in the work of Jesus. Grateful obedience grows from there.
Prayer
Lord, free my heart from trusting in my own merit. Teach me to rest in the righteousness I receive through Christ and obey with gratitude, without trying to earn Your favor. In Jesus’ name, amen.
